✦ July is the month when the beautiful lavender flowers burst into colour, and the village of Brihuega celebrates with its own Lavender Festival.
When you say 'lavender', most people think of the classic images of Provence in France. Did you know that Spain has its very own lavender fields too?
I hopped on a bus to visit Brihuega, a little village in Guadalajara, which is about an hour's drive from Madrid. It is typical for visitors to wear white when they visit the lavender fields, and once you get there you'll see why. The combination of white against the endless fields of rich purple really makes a statement! It's a great place for a wedding photo shoot!
The fields really do make you want to whip out your phone and take endless rounds of photos, it's like we are trying to preserve the feeling and magic of the field into our digital devices. After a while, I realised this lavender bush and row is just like the next, and no matter how many photos I take I can never preserve the beauty of a place in a little handheld device.
You can only really experience the beauty of a place when you put away your phone.
So with technology safely stowed away in my pocket, I noticed a constant, low humming sound. It is actually the sound of the bees at work! They are all busy zipping around and even though you only see one or two flying, there must be millions at work across the fields. As they say, if bees disappear it would be a mega disaster for the ecosystem, so the humming of the bees was a really lovely thing to hear.
There is a sign saying 'Respect the lavender fields' so we know we can't go around with a pair of clippers and start shaving the bushes. But you can buy lavender flowers and all sorts of products made from lavender in the village itself. There are stalls selling just about everything you can think of that can be made with lavender e.g. sachets for the wardrobe, candles, honey, tea and even beer and ice-cream that are lavender-flavoured! You can smell lavender in the air as you enter the market area and even though it's a very tiny market, you'd want to give yourself time to savour the lavender beer and lavender ice-cream!
