Tee off with Port Macquarie Golf Club!

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Port Macquarie Golf Club is the oldest and grandest golf course in Port Macquarie's 100 years history.

History on the green

Time travel back more than 100 years and you'd see early golfers play from the foreshores from Munster Street to Oxley Park. The first course architect for the golf course, Mr. J. Scott was commissioned to submit a plan and work began in 1951. After several delays, the official opening took place in February 1968 by president of the New South Wales Golf Association, Mr Les Graham, with the full 18 holes ready for play.

With such a long history underneath the quiet expanse of green, one cannot help but feel a sense of pride to be standing and putting on the land where Port Macquarie Golf Club stands. One can only take a pause between swings to ponder, who were all the people who have played right here on the very spot you are standing right now?

Learn to golf with a PGA Pro

If you are learning to play golf in Port Macquarie, you'll be very privileged to be coached by James Single, a PGA Professional since 2011.

“I love getting out of the Pro Shop and teaching people to play the game of golf. The thrill I get from teaching when I see a student hit a shot that they thought they weren’t capable of hitting is fantastic.”

Bringing golfers together

There is always something to get involved in at the Port Macquarie Golf Club. On 21st October, the Port Macquarie Women Golfers hosted the Breast Cancer Charity Golf Day with a great presentation and fun afternoon for their annual fundraising. Proceeds went to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Service. In spite of the rain, it was clear that everyone had a great time!

It's a bird, it's a plane!

Here's an interesting fact you may not know about the Port Macquarie Golf Club. Both courses used by the club over the past century have hosted small aircraft! Yes, the metal birds of the early days actually took off and landed right on this golfing area. They provided the most suitable landing strip in town, especially in an emergency.

Saturday, February 5, 1921, was the day when the first aeroplane in history to fly into Port Macquarie landed on what is Oxley Oval today. The Avro 504K biplane was piloted by a certain Lieutenant Roberts of the Australian Flying Corps (later known as the Royal Australian Air Force).

This story adds an exciting touch to the history of the Club to know that so much has happened over the past century.

Golfers can still spot the Bobcat Formation flying across the Golf Course every Saturday morning. Of course, they don't land on the golf course :)

Every hole tells a story

Each hole has a sponsor. When you tee off at each hole, take time to read the sign about the sponsor. We will be covering stories on each hole in the next coming months. Watch for them!

If you happen to be playing a round of golf at the Port Macquarie Golf Club, take a moment and put your ear to the soft grass and see if you can hear the land whisper all the stories of the past!
