✦ Celebrate 10 years of FMYG on Saturday 15th February 2025, 9am-2pm at Mrs York's Garden!
🗓️ When: Saturday 15th February 9 am-2 pm.
💐 What: The event celebrates a decade of volunteer work carried out by the Friends of Mrs York’s Garden, in collaboration with many other Community members & groups, in recreating this iconic headland space known as Mrs York’s Garden.
👤 Who: The Mayor, Adam Roberts along with Uncle Bill O’Brien and special guest Costa Georgiadis will officially open the event at 10 am, welcoming FMYG volunteers, invited special guests and members of Community groups who have partnered with them in their efforts, and the general Public who will enjoy an event that brings all members of the community together in an inclusive celebration with cultural, entertainment, food and fun activities. Of course there will be cake!

The original beautiful headland garden created by Bertha York in the 1960’s, which was then a major tourist attraction for our town, but left to decline after her death in 1971, has been the inspiration for the “Friends”, to recreate the space for the Community to enjoy.
Origins of FMYG
The Friends of Mrs York’s Garden (FMYG) was formed in response to a discussion on the Facebook Page 'You’re From Port Macquarie If You Remember in September 2014', reminiscing on how wonderful the Garden used to look and whether something could be done to restore the area.
Dedicated locals, including Carol Smallman and Dianne McDonald, contacted Bertha’s granddaughter Glenys who had horticultural knowledge and experience, to help with the approach to the Council for permission to work on the area.
Following many discussions and setbacks, the group formed under the auspices of Port Macquarie Land Care. With the help of a Place Making Grant from Port Macquarie Hastings Council, work commenced in February 2015, with a small “trial” area designated to be worked on and zoned to be planted in natives rather than exotics from around the world.
Early Days of Mrs York's Garden
A Decade of Bloom
With enormous commitment and incredible vision, the rest is history, and today the celebration is an opportunity for the community to come to the garden to see what has been achieved over the 10 years, and to experience it as those of the older generation of Port Macquarie did decades ago, a place for rest and relaxation, exercise, picnicking, bird watching, children playing, or simply to experience it as a place to stop and enjoy rather than just passing through.
Through a decade of weekly working bees, the FMYG have engaged in weed and rubbish removal, site preparation and planting of littoral rainforest and coastal headland species, mulching, watering, and weed management to a site of over five acres of often steep and difficult headland area. They have also created attractive and safe structures such as picnic shelters, seating, boardwalks, pathways, public art, and signage to improve the amenity of this popular Public Reserve.
“Join us as we mark a decade of dedication to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Mrs York’s Garden on the stunning Port Macquarie Headland”
“For 10 Years, our volunteer group has worked to nurture native flora and fauna, protect the environment, and create a tranquil space for the community to enjoy breathtaking coastal views. Now it's time to celebrate this incredible milestone together.”
“Let’s honour the past, celebrate the present and look forward to a flourishing future for Mrs York’s Garden. “
“Together Let’s keep the Garden growing!”
Following the opening, visitors will be encouraged to move throughout the garden to wander, relax on a picnic rug or with fold up chairs and enjoy their own lunch or purchase food or drinks that will be available on the day. Enjoy the cultural activities, entertainment, presentations and activities from Local Groups and Community Services such as Land Care, The Lost Plot, Rotary Sunrise, Native Bees, Dementia-friendly Community, Hastings Home Hospice, Kirinari Aged Care/Human Services, Cooeee Sistas Art, Douglas Vale Vineyard, Bunnings, Girl Guides, Koala Conservation Australia, MNC Maritime Museum and others.
Entertainment includes Birpai choir, dance & didg, Bands, Blokes Notes, The Fridge Magnets, Khristina, Alison, Carol & Dave, Tom & Russell.
FMYG are making the event as ecofriendly as possible, by minimising waste and recycling. Bring your own keep cup, use the bins provided and do your best to help! See everyone there! ❋
