The Origins: A Journey That Crossed Continents
Ancient Times
While Italy is the first country that comes to mind when thinking of pasta, the concept of dough-based noodles might have originated far earlier in China around 2000 BC. Some historians believe that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy after his travels to the East in the 13th century, but that’s just one tasty theory.
Middle Ages (1154)
Pasta as we know it started to gain popularity in Italy, particularly in Sicily. During this time, it was made from durum wheat, giving it the signature firmness and structure. Early pasta was more like dried sheets and was often paired with simple ingredients like olive oil and cheese.
1700s
The beloved fork-twirling spaghetti made its mark in Naples, Italy. It was during this period that tomato-based sauces began to complement pasta, following the introduction of tomatoes to Europe from the Americas. Before that, pasta was primarily enjoyed plain or with minimal seasoning.

Ever wondered why pasta comes in so many shapes? It’s not just for fun! Each pasta shape is designed to hold onto sauce differently. For example, the ridges of penne grab sauce in every bite, while spaghetti twirls perfectly around a fork.
Long Live Pasta
In 2010, a team of chefs in Melfi, Italy created the world’s longest noodle measuring more than 100 metres made using 130kg of chestnut flour!
Pasta vs. Noodles
While pasta and noodles may seem interchangeable, they have distinct differences. Pasta is typically made from durum wheat and water, while noodles often use other flours and sometimes include eggs, giving them a different texture and taste.
